......Matted Bass

Matt Brooks

Six String

This bass is my pride and joy. Its a Yamaha TRB VI.

I bought it back in 1997 and haven't put it down yet. It has changed a lot over the years, the biggest change being that it used to be blue. While in college I decided I wanted natural wood instead of the factory blue lacquer so took a chisel to it and after a week of careful hacking got down to the wood and varnished it myself... I added the Yin Yang later during my time in sunny Brighton.

Of all the basses I've played there are none that i can compare to the TRB range. The clarity of the upper register and the punch of the B string make every gig with it a joy to play. Over the time I have had it, its been set up once, that's all, and the only time it has failed me at a gig is when I left it at home!! (very embarrassing)

I strongly recommend any one interested in bass playing try a Yamaha, I almost guarantee you'll end up buying one...

Fretless

This bass was a complete fluke...

It was the first bass I ever owned and possible the best sounding fretless I have ever heard... It started out as a £100 fretted Jazz copy and ended up as the closest Jaco sounding bass ever... I was influenced heavily (as, I think, all bass players are) by Jaco and after reading his biog jumped on this bass with chisels and wood putty. I had no idea what I was doing but that was the fun...

It took me ages to find a finish for the neck that I was happy with because I didn't want to leave it just plain wood like most of the factory made basses are, because I never got that aggressive fretless sound I was looking for... In the end I found a dining table top lacquer that was so hard, even 6 years down the line very little scratching can be seen.

Fender Jazz

Can I here ya say POP!!

This is the most slap happy bass under the sun... Marcus Miller really knew what he wanted from his bass when he put his name to this one, the tightest slap sound known to humanity... The only thing I think they got wrong with this bass is the two volume pots. They are either all or nothing.. If the sound wasn't sooo good in the 'all' position I wouldn't have bought it.

Try one you'll love it...

Upright Bass

Steadily becoming the love of my life this bass still astounds me. Its a middle range instrument with the sound of a legend. After bullying instrument makers I finally got the action I was looking for and it just sounds better with every note I beat out of it :-)

It really is true with these instruments, the more you use them the better they sound!!

Acoustic Bass

This crafter fretless acoustic sounds divine. I always wanted an acoustic bass and when I found this fretless one at the guitar show in Birmingham I had to have one.

Try one, I guarantee you'll feel the same...
